ABOUT AUTHOR
The first batch of soybeans, sown on June 27, 2026, has been carefully cultivated through weeding, earthing up, and fertilizing — all using green fertilizer made from grass clippings, leaves, and kitchen waste from our own backyard. They are growing very well and are now approaching the full bloom of small white flowers. The fragrance of fresh green beans is already in the air, filling me with immense excitement and satisfaction. Encouraged and inspired by this success, I planted several more batches, which are growing even more vigorously.
Edamame is too expensive in Toronto — 2 to 4 Canadian dollars per pound. My wife always says, “Why eat edamame here? We can have it when we go back to China.” Since leaving our daughter’s home, we’ve hardly eaten any edamame at all. But I just couldn’t accept that. So I thought, “Rely on ourselves — if we work hard, we’ll have plenty to eat.” This not only represents a bountiful harvest gained through physical labor, but it also brings back the flavor of a delicious reward that I first experienced during my youth in the 1970s, when I was sent to the countryside as part of the “rustication” movement.
At this moment, I can’t help but recall Chairman Mao’s earnest teaching: “It is highly necessary for educated youth to go to the countryside to receive re-education from the poor and lower-middle peasants.” Those words have benefited me throughout my entire life.
